Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, dies at 99

LONDON — Britain’s Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died at age 99, Buckingham Palace announced in a statement Friday.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the statement read. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

It continued: “Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

The news comes just weeks after Philip was discharged from a London hospital March 16 following a heart procedure, The Associated Press previously reported.

The prince was first hospitalized for treatment of an infection on Feb. 16, the AP reported. On March 3, he was transferred to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, where he “underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition” before returning to King Edward VII’s Hospital for continuing treatment and recovery, Buckingham Palace said at the time.

Other than the queen, whom Philip wed in 1947, his survivors include their four children, Prince Charles, 72; Princess Anne, 70; Prince Andrew, 61; and Prince Edward, 57, according to the AP. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren – including Charles’ sons, Prince William and Prince Harry; Anne’s children, Peter and Zara Phillips; Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie; and Edward’s children, Lady Louise and Viscount Severn – as well as nine great-grandchildren, the news agency reported.
