Hurricane Milton: County-by-county list of school closures in Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As Hurricane Milton nears Florida’s west coast, Northeast Florida school districts are preparing for potential impacts by announcing closures.

Northeast Florida:

Action News Jax is keeping an eye on possible school closures in the Northeast Florida area.

Duval County:

  • Duval County Public Schools will be closed from Wednesday, Oct. 9, through Friday, Oct. 11. All school activities, including athletics and after-school programs, are canceled for those days. After the storm passes and personnel begin recovery efforts, the district will announce operations for the following week.

St. Johns County:

  • All SJCSD schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, October 9, Thursday, October 10, and Friday, October 11. All extracurricular activities, athletic events, and extended day programs are also canceled or closed Wednesday through Friday. Extracurricular activities and athletic events after school hours and on the weekend are canceled.

Clay County:

  • Due to Hurricane Milton’s potential impact, all schools and district offices will close on Wednesday, October 9th, and Thursday, October 10th. Once the storm has passed and recovery efforts begin, the district will provide an update on Friday’s operations.

Baker County:

  • Baker County schools and after-school activities will be closed on Thursday, October 10. Schools will reopen on Friday, October 11.

Columbia County:

  • Columbia County schools will be closed on Wednesday, October 9th, and Thursday, October 10th. While the storm itself may not pose a significant threat, the county is already experiencing heavy traffic due to evacuations from surrounding counties, and school staff is also concerned about potential power outages across the county. Normal operations will resume on Friday, October 11th. Please note that Monday, October 14th, which was originally scheduled as a Teacher Workday, will now serve as a weather makeup day for all students and staff.

Putnam County:

  • All PCSD schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, October 8, through Thursday, October 10. Beginning Tuesday, October 8, all after-school programs and athletic activities are cancelled. A decision on Friday, October 11, will be made at a later time.

Bradford County:

  • Due to the potential impact of Hurricane Milton, all Bradford County Schools will be closed for students on Wednesday, October 9th, Thursday, October 10th, and Friday, October 11th. Friday, October 11th will now become the teacher planning day that was previously scheduled for Monday, October 14th. Monday, October 14th, will now be a regular school day for students and staff.

Union County:

  • The Union County School District will be open on Wednesday, October 9th—all after-school activities, practices, and games will be canceled. It will be fully closed on Thursday, October 10th, and will reopen on Friday, October 11th, unless the schools are without power and the roads are not accessible to buses.

Nassau County:

  • All schools in the Nassau County School District will be closed on Wednesday, October 9th, and Thursday, October 10th due to Hurricane Milton. Once the storm has passed and recovery efforts begin, the district will provide an update on Friday’s operations.

Southeast Georgia:

Action News Jax is keeping an eye on possible school closures in the Southeast Georgia area.

Camden County:

  • The calendar originally marked Friday, October 11, as a Professional Learning day. To prevent extending the school year, Camden County Schools has converted this day, along with October 9 and 10, Wednesday and Thursday, into distance learning days. The district will continue to observe the previously scheduled holiday on Monday, October 14. If you have any questions about distance learning and the activities sent home, please reach out to the leadership at your child’s school.

Glynn County:

Charlton County

  • None listed at this time

Ware County:

  • All Ware County Schools will be closed to students through Friday, Oct. 18, 2024 from Hurricane Helene. This includes the week of Fall Break, which is October 14-18, 2024. The district looks forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, October 21, 2024.

Pierce County:

  • None listed at this time

Brantley County:

  • None listed at this time

Private schools:

The Bolles School: All campuses of The Bolles School will be closed Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10. School staff will assess each campus following the storm to ensure it is safe to return to school on Friday.

Diocese of St. Augustine: Catholic schools will stay open Tuesday but will close for the remainder of the week, Wednesday, October 9 through Friday, October 11.

Episcopal School of Jacksonville: All three campuses will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, October 9, 10, and 11. Campuses are CLOSED for all extracurricular activities during this time. Teachers will send work home with K through grade 12 students to complete as they’re able.

Providence School: The school close on Wednesday and Thursday, October 9-10. Fall break will be as scheduled Friday, October 11 – Monday, October 14. Staff anticipates being back in school as scheduled on Tuesday, October 15, but will continue to provide updates about reopening.

St. Johns Country Day School: The school will be closed this week Wednesday-Thursday. The School has a scheduled holiday on Friday and Monday, so classes are predicted to resume on Tuesday, October 15.

Trinity Christian Academy: TCA will close Wednesday at noon and resume classes on Tuesday, October 15. Monday is a Faculty Development Day (no school for students). Upper Division students: If you’re registered for the PSAT/SAT, testing will proceed as scheduled at your assigned date and time. Oakleaf ELC will close Wednesday at noon and reopen on Monday, October 14.

Colleges and Universities:

Edward Waters University: All classes, including online sessions, will be canceled effective at 5:00 pm Tuesday October 8, 2024 through Thursday, October 10, 2024. EWU aims to resume regular operations on Friday, October 11, 2024

Flagler College: The campus, including residential halls, is closed. The College will remain closed until the all-clear is given. All classes have moved to remote learning and remain remote for the rest of the week. Normal operations are expected to resume on Monday, Oct. 14. In-person classes are expected to resume on Wednesday, Oct. 16, due to fall break on Monday and Tuesday.

Florida Gateway College: All offices and campuses, will be closed on Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10. All classes and college activities scheduled for these days are canceled.

Florida State College at Jacksonville: All classes and activities on FSCJ campuses and centers are canceled Wednesday, October 9 through Friday, October 11 due to Hurricane Milton. This includes online classes and administrative offices.

St. Johns River State College: SJR State will be closed Wednesday, October 9 through Friday, October 11. All classes (including online classes), events, and activities have been canceled. The College is closed on Monday for a federal holiday. The College will reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

University of North Florida: All classes, including online classes, will be canceled Wednesday, October 9. There are no classes on Thursday, October 10, and Friday, October 11, due to the Fall Break. University offices will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, and activities and events on campus are also canceled on those days. The University will evaluate tomorrow if offices will be closed on Friday, October 11, based on updated information about the storm.
