Hurricane Milton: Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia shelter information

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As Hurricane Milton is set to impact Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, some parts of our area are opening up shelters.

Action News Jax is monitoring local counties as they release this information and will update this story as we learn more.

Duval County:

The following shelters will open at 8 a.m. on October 9:

  • Atlantic Coast High School - 9735 R. G. Skinner Parkway. Open for special medical needs, pet-friendly.
  • Chaffee Trail Elementary - 11400 Sam Caruso Way. Open for the general population.
  • The Legends Center - 5130 Soutel Dr. is pet-friendly for the general population and special medical needs.
  • Landmark Middle - 101 Kernan Blvd. Open for the general population, pet-friendly.
  • LaVilla School of the Arts - 501 N. Davis St. Open for the general population.
  • Arlington Middle School – 8141 Lone Star Rd. Open for the general population.

Clay County:

Four shelters will open Wednesday at 6:00 a.m.:

  • Orange Park High, 2300 Kingsley Ave., (Pet friendly)
  • Keystone Elementary, 335 SW Pecan St, Keystone Heights (Pet friendly)
  • Lake Asbury Junior High, 2851 Sandridge Rd., Green Cove Springs (Special needs shelter)
  • Wilkinson Elementary, 4965 Co Rd 218, Middleburg

Columbia County:

Shelters will open at 6 p.m. October 8, 2024. Shelter locations include:

  • Deep Creek Community Center, 11934 N. US Highway 441, Lake City, FL 32055
  • Richardson Community Center, 255 NE Coach Anders Ln., Lake City, FL 32055 (Special Needs and General Population)
  • Fort White Community Center, 17579 SW State Road 47, Fort White 32038
  • Shands Lake Shore HRIM, 428 NE Davis Ave, Lake City, FL 32055 (Pet Friendly)

Nassau County:

Shelters will open at 8 a.m. October 9, 2024. Shelter location includes:

  • Wildlight Elementary, 550 Curiosity Ave, Yulee, FL 32097.

Putnam County:

Hurricane Milton Shelters will open on Tuesday, October 8, at 6 pm.:

  • Ochwilla Elementary, 299 State Rd 21, Hawthorne (pet-friendly)
  • Kelley Smith Elementary, 141 Kelley Smith School Rd, Palatka
  • Jenkins Elementary, 251 County Rd. 315, Interlachen
  • Browning Pearce Elementary, 100 Bear Blvd., San Mateo
  • Middleton Burney Elementary, 1020 Huntington Rd., Crescent City

St. Johns County:

Three storm shelters will open at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, to accommodate evacuees:

  • Special Medical Needs: Freedom Crossing Academy, 1365 Shetland Drive, St. Johns
  • Pet Friendly: South Woods Elementary School, 4750 State Road 206 West, Elkton
  • General Population: Pedro Menendez High School, 600 State Road 206 West, St. Augustine

Camden County:

A shelter of last resort will be available for residents who live in flood-prone areas, regions vulnerable to high wind, and those who are considered vulnerable due to medical conditions, self-care needs, or age. It is located at the PSA Building, 1050 Wildcat Drive, Kingsland, and is opening at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, October 8, 2024

Recommended items to bring to a shelter

  • 3-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day)
  • 3-day supply of non-perishable ready-to-eat food
  • Manual can opener
  • Snacks
  • 7-day supply of medications, diapers, depends, chux, etc.
  • If you are a diabetic on insulin, bring a small cooler for your insulin (or any refrigerated medications)
  • Personal grooming/hygiene items, feminine supplies
  • Baby food and diapers for infants
  • Extra clothing, rain gear, closed-toed shoes
  • Eyeglasses
  • Books, magazines, cards, games, etc.
  • Air mattress (twin size) / camping bed
  • Lawn chair/chaise lounge
  • Pillows, blankets, sheets
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Personal identification / Important papers
  • Entertainment items: cards, toys, games, books, magazines, etc.
  • Electronics: cell phones, laptops, tablets, charging cables
  • Wheelchair/walker/cane, if needed
  • Oxygen, if needed – Special Needs Shelters Only
  • Supplies for your service animal – Special Needs Shelters Only
